SELENIUM
Selenium is a part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which metabolizes hydroperoxides formed from polyunsaturated fatty acids Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, which are important antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant properties of selenoproteins help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Free radicals are natural by-products of oxygen metabolism that may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Other selenoproteins help regulate thyroid function, play a role in the immune system and critical for control of the numerous chemical reactions involved in brain and body functions.
Selenium helps to boost the immune system and fight off infection, providing a general increase in the body's defense against dangerous bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells.
Benefits of Selenium:
Acts as an antioxidant. The enzyme selenium-glutathione-peroxides neutralizes hydrogen peroxide, which is produced by some cell processes and would otherwise damage cell membranes. Some also use the for the purpose of whitening (through its antioxidant effect) although this does not come under the scope of its normal use.
Provides protection from the toxic effects of heavy metals and other substances.
Assists in the synthesis of protein, in growth and development, and in fertility, especially in men. It has been shown to improve the production of sperm and sperm motility.
Prevent cancer; protect against heart attack and stroke; guard against cataracts and muscular degeneration; promote healing of cold sores and shingles.
